He was born on April 23, 1813, in Brandon, Vermont. His father was a doctor named Stephen Arnold Douglass. Sadly, his father died when Stephen was only two months old. This left his mother and older sister, Sally, to run their farm. Young Stephen worked very hard on the land. He spent most of his time chopping wood and moving rocks.

As he grew up, Douglas learned many new skills. He worked as an apprentice to a cabinetmaker. He loved working in the wood shop very much. Later, he moved to New York to study more. He attended Canandaigua Academy to learn about Latin and Greek. He was a very talented debater in school.

This skill helped him later in his career. He enjoyed talking about ideas and politics with others. His peers thought he was a wonderful student.

People called him the "Little Giant." This was because he was short but had a huge personality. He served in the U.S. House of Representatives and the U.S. Senate. He helped create the Compromise of 1850 to help the country stay peaceful. He also supported an idea called popular sovereignty. This meant people in new lands could vote on slavery.
