Douglas moved west to Illinois to start his career. He worked hard and rose to become a U.S. Senator. During this time, the country had big fights about slavery. Douglas tried to find a way to keep peace. He helped lead the Compromise of 1850. He also liked the idea of "popular sovereignty." This meant each new land could vote on slavery.

In 1858, Douglas had famous debates with Abraham Lincoln.
