Stegosaurians are divided into two main families. One family is the Huayangosauridae. The other is the more diverse Stegosauridae. Stegosaurids are distinguished by several specific features. They have long, narrow skulls. They also have much longer hindlimbs than forelimbs. Most stegosaurids lost their pre-maxillary teeth. This means they lacked teeth in the front of their upper beak. Instead, they had a horn-covered beak called a rhamphotheca. This structure is similar to those in modern birds and turtles.

The most famous feature is the dorsal dermal plates. These are large, thin, and erect plates. They often run from the neck to the tail. Scientists debate their exact purpose. Some suggest they helped with thermo-regulation, or controlling body heat. Others think they were used for display. Recent studies of bone growth suggest functions changed during life. The tail also featured pairs of spikes. This structure is called a thagomizer. These spikes likely served as weapons for defense.

History shows how our understanding of these animals grew. In 1874, large remains were found in England. They were named Omosaurus, but later renamed Dacentrurus. In 1877, Arthur Lakes found a nearly complete skeleton in Wyoming. Professor Othniel Charles Marsh named this genus Stegosaurus. At first, Marsh had incorrect ideas about their shape. He thought the plates were a flat skin cover. He also thought they walked on two legs. Later discoveries corrected these views.

Many important discoveries happened in China during the twentieth century. Systematic surveys since the 1950s have been very successful. Chinese finds represent about half of all known stegosaurian diversity. Important species include Huayangosaurus and Tuojiangosaurus. Huayangosaurus is especially important for studying evolution. It lived during the Middle Jurassic. It provides a look at the earliest members of the group. These fossils show the transition from early forms to later stegosaurids.

Studying stegosaurian anatomy reveals how they moved. Their long hindlimbs held the tail high. This allowed the tail to point horizontally. A high tail position helped the thagomizer defend against predators. The tail had more mobility because it lacked certain stiff tendons. Their massive shoulder girdles supported heavy forelimbs. Some researchers suggest they could rear up on their hind legs. This might have helped them reach higher plants. Their wide pelvises allowed for very large bellies.
