A stationary bicycle is a piece of exercise equipment used for indoor cycling.

These machines are also called exercise bikes, spinning bikes, or exercycles. They resemble a standard bicycle but do not have wheels. Instead, they feature a saddle, pedals, and handlebars arranged in a familiar way. People use these devices to increase general fitness or to assist with weight loss. They are also vital tools for training for specific cycling events.

Most stationary bicycles operate through a specific mechanical process. The machine typically uses a crankshaft and a bottom bracket to function. When a person pedals, these parts rotate to turn a heavy wheel called a flywheel. This rotation is usually transferred via a belt or a chain.

Because these parts are constantly moving, the bearings on the crankshaft and bottom bracket can wear down. Over time, these components may require replacement to keep the machine working smoothly.

To make the exercise more difficult, these machines use various resistance mechanisms. Resistance is a force that makes the pedals harder to turn. Some models use magnets to create this resistance. Other machines utilize fans or friction mechanisms to add intensity.

Some specialized models even allow a user to pedal backwards. This helps exercise antagonist muscles, which are the muscles that perform the opposite action of those used during forward pedaling.

There are several distinct types of stationary bicycles available today. Some models feature handlebars that connect directly to the pedals. This design allows the user to exercise their upper body along with their lower body. This type of machine functions much like an elliptical trainer.

Another category includes specialized indoor bicycles used for "spinning" exercises. These machines use a weighted flywheel located at the front. For those with limited space, portable mini-cycles exist. These are often called exercise pedallers and are low-cost substitutes for full-sized bikes.

These are useful for people who travel for work or are away from a gym.

The history of these machines stretches back quite far. The ancestors of modern stationary bicycles can be traced to the end of the eighteenth century. One notable early example of such a device was called the Gymnasticon. While modern bikes look very different, the core idea of indoor cycling has been around for centuries. Today, we can even adapt ordinary bicycles for stationary use. This is done by placing a regular bike on bicycle rollers or a trainer.

Stationary bicycles are highly significant in the fields of medicine and physical therapy. They provide low-impact cardiovascular exercise, which means they do not put much stress on a person's joints. Because the movement is controlled and lacks sporadic motions, they are safe for many users.

Doctors frequently use them in cardiac rehabilitation programs. This helps patients recover from heart-related conditions or various heart surgeries. The adjustable nature of the resistance allows for a very gradual improvement in cardiovascular health.

Beyond simple fitness, these machines serve as scientific tools called ergometers. An ergometer is a device used for measuring power. Traditionally, this was done by imposing mechanical resistance. Modern ergometers often use electronic sensors and digital displays to provide precise data.

These tools are even used in the extreme environment of outer space. On the International Space Station (ISS), astronauts use a specific ergometer known as CEVIS. This stands for the Cycle Ergometer with Vibration Isolation and Stabilization System.

Using the CEVIS is essential for astronauts living in microgravity. In space, the body can experience cardiovascular deconditioning. This means the heart and blood vessels can lose some of their strength without the constant pull of Earth's gravity. By using the stationary bike, astronauts can counter these effects and maintain their health. This shows how a simple piece of gym equipment can become a vital tool for human survival in space.
