It began as a television series created by Gene Roddenberry. Today, it is a worldwide pop culture phenomenon. The franchise includes many different types of media. These include feature films, television series, video games, novels, and comic books. It is one of the most recognizable and highest-grossing franchises ever made. Fans of the series are often called "Trekkies" or "Trekkers."

Most stories follow the crew of a starship in Starfleet.

Starfleet is a peacekeeping and humanitarian armada. They serve the United Federation of Planets. The most famous ship is the USS Enterprise. The crew travels through the 23rd century and beyond. Their mission is to explore strange new worlds and seek out new life. The characters often face difficult moral dilemmas. They must apply altruistic values to solve these problems.

Roddenberry used several different inspirations to build this world. He was inspired by the Horatio Hornblower novels by C. S. Forester. He also looked at the 1726 novel Gulliver's Travels by Jonathan Swift. Other influences included the 1956 film Forbidden Planet and television westerns like Wagon Train. He called his concept a "Wagon Train to the stars." He wanted the stories to work on two levels. They were suspenseful adventures and morality tales at the same time.

The franchise has several distinct eras and timelines. The Original Series premiered in September 1966. After that, the adventures continued in The Animated Series. A television revival began in the late 1980s. This era included The Next Generation, which followed a new crew a century later. Other shows included Deep Space Nine, Voyager, and Enterprise. In 2009, the films underwent a reboot. This created an alternate continuity called the Kelvin timeline.

Recent years have seen a new digital revival. This began with streaming in 2017. Some series like Discovery and Strange New Worlds are set before the original show. Other series like Picard and Lower Decks are set after The Next Generation. Some stories, like Starfleet Academy, are set much later in the 32nd century. The franchise has also expanded into many products. These include figurines, toys, and even a constructed language called Klingon.

Star Trek has a very significant cultural impact. It is known for its progressive stances on civil rights. The Original Series featured one of the first multiracial casts on American television. Roddenberry used alien worlds as allegories for Earth. He used stories to discuss war, peace, and human rights. He also explored topics like racism, sexism, and religion. He wanted to show a future where humanity learned to end violence. The Vulcans are a great example of this. They had a violent past but learned to control their emotions.

Production of the original series was a difficult process. NBC initially rejected the first pilot, "The Cage." However, they liked the concept enough to order a second pilot. The show faced low ratings and threats of cancellation. A massive letter-writing campaign by fans helped save it. This campaign was led by a person named Bjo Trimble. Even though the show lasted only three seasons, it became a massive success. By 1977, the series was airing in 120 different countries.
