Nimoy's career followed a path of steady growth and hard work. He began acting at age eight in local neighborhood theater. As a young man, he worked many jobs to support his family. Before becoming a star, Nimoy spent over a decade as a character actor. He often played "heavies," which are characters who act as villains. These roles frequently involved using weapons like guns or switchblades. He appeared in over 50 small parts in B movies and television. His credits include shows like Gunsmoke, Perry Mason, and Dragnet. He also appeared in the science fiction series The Outer Limits. During this time, he worked to overcome his Boston accent. He decided to focus on supporting roles rather than lead roles. He believed his lean appearance made stardom as a leading man unlikely.
