Created, written, and directed by Hwang Dong-hyuk, the series was produced for Netflix. It tells the story of 456 contestants who are all facing extreme financial hardship. These individuals are invited to participate in a secret contest involving various children's games. While the games seem simple, the stakes are incredibly high. If a player is eliminated from a game, they face death. The participants compete for a chance to win a massive cash prize that could solve their debts.

The mechanism of the contest relies on strict rules and intense surveillance. Players are required to wear green tracksuits to identify them easily. They are watched constantly by masked guards wearing pink jumpsuits. These guards are overseen by a leader known as the Front Man, who wears a black mask and a black uniform. The games themselves are designed to be physically and psychologically challenging. A key part of the competition involves the death of players. Each time a player is eliminated, their death contributes to the growing total of the grand prize.

The series features different types of games and character roles. Some games focus on precision, such as the dalgona challenge. In this game, players must extract a specific shape from a Korean sugar candy without breaking it.

Other games, like Red Light, Green Light, are designed to eliminate large numbers of people quickly. The characters also fall into specific roles. The protagonist, Seong Gi-hun, attempts to survive through alliances with others like Cho Sang-woo and Kang Sae-byeok. Meanwhile, a detective named Hwang Jun-ho infiltrates the staff to search for his missing brother.

The history of the show began long before it reached viewers. Hwang Dong-hyuk first wrote the script in 2009. He was inspired by his own economic struggles and the class disparity in South Korea. During this time, he spent time in manhwabangs, which are Korean comic cafes, reading survival manga. He wanted to create an allegory about modern capitalist society and extreme competition. However, many production companies rejected the script. They told him the story was too bizarre or grotesque. It was not until 2019 that Netflix showed interest as they expanded their foreign programming.

Squid Game achieved massive significance upon its release. The first season premiered worldwide on September 17, 2021. It quickly became Netflix's most-watched series. The show received significant critical acclaim and won many prestigious awards. This includes six Primetime Emmy Awards and one Golden Globe.

Following the success of the first season, a second season was released on December 26, 2024. The third and final season followed on June 27, 2025. These final two seasons were filmed back-to-back.

There are many notable details regarding the production and characters. Hwang based several characters on real people from his life. Seong Gi-hun was inspired by Hwang's own upbringing in the Ssangmun district of Seoul. The character Cho Sang-woo reflected Hwang's time at Seoul National University. The title itself comes from a popular Korean children's game from the 1970s and 1980s. Hwang chose this specific game because it was physically aggressive and symbolic of competitive society.

Ultimately, Squid Game connects to broader themes of social and economic systems. It serves as a fable about the pressures of capitalism and the nature of human competition. The series explores how extreme environments affect human relationships and survival instincts. By using simple children's games, the show highlights the contrast between innocent play and the harsh realities of adult life. It remains a flagship series for Netflix, representing the global reach of South Korean storytelling.
