On October 4, 1957, the Soviet Union launched Sputnik 1. 

Sputnik 1 moved very fast. It took about 96 minutes to go around the Earth once. It finished 1,440 orbits before it fell. Air drag pulled it back toward our planet. On January 4, 1958, it burned up in the atmosphere.

How did this little sphere work in space? It was a polished metal ball with four long antennas. These antennas sent radio pulses back down to people on Earth. The satellite used three silver-zinc batteries to make power. These batteries kept the transmitter working for 22 days. After the power ran out, the signals stopped. The development of Sputnik 1 involved several different design stages. Originally, scientists planned a complex satellite called "Object D." This version was intended to weigh 1,320 kilograms. It would have carried 350 kilograms of scientific instruments. However, the design proved too difficult to complete by the deadline. Engineers realized the R-7 engines had lower specific impulse than planned. Consequently, they pivoted to a simpler design called "Object PS." This stands for "prosteishiy sputnik," or elementary satellite. 
Building the satellite required massive coordination between many Soviet institutions. The USSR Academy of Sciences provided scientific leadership. The Ministry of the Defense Industry, through OKB-1, built the satellite. The Ministry of the Radio technical Industry developed the control systems. The Ministry of the Ship Building Industry worked on gyroscope devices. Even the Ministry of Machine Building helped with launching and refueling. This teamwork allowed the Soviet Union to reach space quickly.
The launch process was a significant engineering challenge. The R-7 rocket was originally designed as an intercontinental ballistic missile. It was the most powerful rocket in the world at that time. To launch the satellite, engineers used a modified version called 8K71PS. This version was lighter than the military rocket. It had a reduced mass of 287,000 kilograms. The thrust at liftoff was also adjusted for the mission.
Launching the rocket required many successful tests. The first attempt in May 1957 ended in a crash. A second attempt in July 1957 failed due to an electrical short. These failures meant the team had to refine their technology. Finally, a successful launch occurred on 21 August 1957. This success allowed Korolev to prepare for the actual Sputnik launch. The satellite was eventually launched from the 5th Tyuratam range. This site is now known as the Baikonur Cosmodrome. 
Sputnik 1 provided scientists with essential data about our planet. By monitoring the satellite's orbit, they deduced the density of the upper atmosphere. They used the drag on the orbit to measure this density. The propagation of radio signals also provided data about the ionosphere. The ionosphere is a layer of the atmosphere that affects radio waves. These findings were vital for future space exploration. 
The mission ended after three months in space. Sputnik 1 completed 1,440 orbits around the Earth. It traveled a total distance of approximately 72 million kilometers. On 4 January 1958, aerodynamic drag caused the satellite to fall. It reentered the atmosphere and burned up. This successful mission changed how humans interact with space forever.
