Some people do very bad things. A spree killer is a person who kills two or more people in a short time. This often happens in many different places.

Experts have different ideas about how long a spree lasts. Some say there is almost no break between killings. Others say a spree can last weeks or even months. For example, Andrew Cunanan killed five people over three months.

A spree killer is not the same as a serial killer. A serial killer kills people at different times. They have a cooling-off period, which is a break between crimes. A mass murderer kills many people in just one event.

It can be hard to tell these crimes apart. Some experts use time to show the difference. Others look at how many locations are used. One group says a spree killer kills three or more people in 30 days. They also say these killers often commit another crime too.

Police often find a spree killer while the crime is still going on. This is different from serial killers. Their names are often known before they are caught.
