A spreadsheet is a computer application used to organize, analyze, and store data.

It works by using a large grid made of small boxes called cells. These cells are arranged into rows and columns. Columns are named with letters like A, B, or C. Rows are named with numbers like 1, 2, or 3. You can find any specific cell by its location, such as C10.

Many spreadsheets are kept together in one large file called a workbook. A workbook can hold many different sheets, which act like pages in a book. Modern software can even turn this data into graphs or charts.

Spreadsheets work through a clever system of formulas. You can type text, numbers, or dates into a cell. To do math, you start a formula with an equals sign. For example, you might type =5*C10 to multiply five by the value in cell C10.

The real power comes from chaining these formulas together. This means one cell can use the result from another cell. If you change one number, every connected cell updates automatically. This makes it very easy to do "what-if" analysis. You can change a value and instantly see how it affects your whole plan.

People have used tables to organize information for a very long time. The Babylonians used clay tablets to store data as far back as 1800 BCE. Much later, accountants used paper sheets called ledgers. These were large sheets of paper ruled into rows and columns. The term "spreadsheet" originally described these paper sheets spread across facing pages in a book.

Computerized versions began to appear in the 1960s on large mainframe computers.

Important milestones helped make spreadsheets what they are today. In 1969, a program called LANPAR was developed for mainframe computers. It was created by Rene Pardo and Remy Landau after they graduated from Harvard. LANPAR was special because it used natural order calculation. This allowed users to type information in any order. In 1979, VisiCalc became the first spreadsheet for microcomputers.

This helped the Apple II become a very popular personal computer. Later, Lotus 1-2-3 became a leader during the DOS era. Today, Microsoft Excel is a very common tool on Windows and Mac computers. Google also offers a web version called Google Sheets.

Spreadsheets are now a standard part of most office software suites. These suites often include other tools like word processors and presentation programs. Because they are part of a suite, it is easy to share data between them. While spreadsheets are great for tables, they are different from databases. A spreadsheet is usually just one table. A database is a much larger collection of many different tables that are linked together. You can move data between them, but they serve different jobs.
