A sporangium is a tiny home for spores.

Most plants and fungi have them. A sporangium can be one cell. It can also be made of many cells.

In fungi, the sporangium makes spores. It sits on a stem called a sporangiophore. To make a spore, the sporangium wraps a tiny part of itself in a tough skin. These spores can fly on the wind. When they land, they grow into new parts called hyphae.

In ferns, sporangia grow in groups.

We call these groups sori. They often grow on the bottom of a leaf. Some ferns make two kinds of spores. These are called microspores and megaspores.

Some plants have special parts to hold these homes. In seed plants, they are in flowers or cones. In flowering plants, microsporangia are in the anthers.

The anthers are parts of the stamens. This is a very busy way for life to grow and spread.
