Spodumene

earth science Maturity 7-9 Next article →

Spodumene is a special mineral that holds a lot of lithium. Lithium is a very important part used in many modern things. It is used to make batteries for mobile phones and electric cars. People also use it for medicine and ceramics. This mineral is a pyroxene, which is a type of mineral group. It is a very useful source for the world.

Getting lithium out of this mineral is a hard job. The lithium is held very tightly inside the crystal structure. One way to fix this is through a process called roasting. This means heating the mineral to very high temperatures. When it reaches above 900 °C, it changes its form. It turns from alpha-spodumene into beta-spodumene. This new form is more open and reactive. This makes it easier to pull the lithium out with acid.

A naturalist named Jose Bonifacio de Andrada e Silva discovered it. He first described the mineral in the year 1800. It was found in a place called Utö in Sweden. The name comes from a Greek word meaning "burnt to ashes." This is because the material looks like grey ash when refined. Spodumene can grow into large, long prism shapes. Some crystals from the Black Hills in South Dakota are very big.

Spodumene is found in many different countries around the world. It is in Brazil, Australia, and Canada. It is also in the United States and the Democratic Republic of Congo. Australia is a leading country for producing lithium today. The Greenbushes mine in Western Australia is a very famous site. It has some of the highest grades of ore. In 2021, a company called AVZ Minerals worked on a huge deposit in the Congo.

This mineral can also be a beautiful gemstone. Some parts are purple and are called kunzite. Kunzite was named after a man named George Frederick Kunz. Other parts are green and are called hiddenite. Hiddenite is named after a man named William Earl Hidden. These colorful stones are prized for their pretty colors. You might even see these minerals in a jewelry shop.
