Spelling is a set of rules for writing. It shows how letters match the sounds we speak.

Most people use dictionaries to learn the right way. Some people enter spelling bees to show their skill. These are contests to find the best spellers.

Sometimes, people spell things on purpose. A shop might change a word to get attention. This is used in ads for brands like Dunkin' Donuts. Other times, mistakes happen by accident. A person might swap two letters when typing. This can even change the name of a place. The town of Arab, Alabama, got its name from a map error. The name Google also came from a mistake. The founders meant to type a different word.

Spelling can be hard because languages change. Words often come from other languages. This can make the rules tricky. Some countries even try to change their spelling rules. They want the letters to match the sounds better. This helps everyone read and write in the same way.
