Some people practice speaking in tongues. This is also called glossolalia.

It happens when people make speech-like sounds. Many believers think these are holy languages. They may not know the words they are saying. Some people think they are speaking a real language they never learned before. This is called xenolalia.

In the Bible, followers of Christ spoke in many different languages.

This happened after they received the Holy Spirit. Many religions use this practice. Some people study how it sounds. A man named William Samarin studied it for five years. He found the sounds have a rhythm. They use sounds that the speaker already knows. However, the sounds do not form real words. They do not carry a clear meaning to others.

People have talked about this for a long time. In the old days, some thought it was a divine language. In the 1800s, many groups used it in worship. Some members of the LDS Church believed they spoke the language of Adam.
