These mammals were divided into several major groups. Basal sparassodonts were the earliest forms from the Paleocene to the Miocene. Hathliacynids lived from the late Oligocene to the late Pliocene. They ranged in size from a marten to a thylacine. Basal borhyaenoids were another group that included various forms. Borhyaenids were specialized for running. Proborhyaenids were robust, wolverine-like animals with ever-growing canines. Finally, thylacosmilids were specialized terrestrial hunters with saber-like teeth. 
Sparassodonts varied greatly in their physical size. Some were very small, weighing only about 2.2 pounds. These small forms resembled modern weasels or civets. Other members were much larger. The thylacosmilids could reach the size of a leopard. The largest known sparassodont was Proborhyaena. This animal was roughly the size of a spectacled bear.
