The Southern Baptist Convention (SBC) is a major Christian denomination in the United States.

It is the largest Protestant organization in the country. It is also the second-largest Christian body in the United States. The SBC is not a single, central church. Instead, it is a cooperation of many fully autonomous, independent churches. These churches share resources to support missions. They are united by commonly held essential beliefs.

Members of the SBC follow evangelical doctrines and practices. A central focus is the individual conversion experience. This is a personal change in faith. This conversion is affirmed through believer's baptism. In this tradition, baptism involves being completely immersed in water.

This act is a public and symbolic expression. It represents the burial of a previous life and a resurrection to new life. The SBC teaches that baptism is not a requirement for salvation. Other core beliefs include a male pastorate. This practice is often based on an interpretation of 1 Timothy 2:12. The denomination also holds that marriage should only be between a man and a woman.

The history of Baptists in America began in the colonial era. Most early Baptists came from England during the 17th century. They sought religious freedom after conflicts with the Church of England. Roger Williams founded the first Baptist church in British America in 1638. This occurred in the Providence Plantations of Rhode Island. In the South, the First Baptist Church of Charleston, South Carolina, was organized in 1682.

By 1740, about eight Baptist churches existed in the colonies. These early groups practiced congregationalist polity. This means they operated independently of state-established Anglican churches. During the American Revolution, leaders like James Madison helped defend religious freedom.

In 1814, Baptists attempted to unify through the Triennial Convention. This group met every three years and supported global missions. However, deep divisions emerged in the mid-19th century. These tensions were driven by social, cultural, and political differences. The most significant conflict involved the issue of slavery. Northern and Southern Baptists disagreed on the morality of the institution. In 1844, a disagreement arose regarding missionary appointments. The Foreign Mission Board refused to appoint an enslaver as a missionary. This decision challenged the views of many Southern leaders.

The Southern Baptist Convention was officially formed in 1845. This happened in Augusta, Georgia. The group separated from the Triennial Convention to uphold the institution of slavery. Southern Baptists wanted to ensure that enslavers could hold denominational offices. This split was a direct result of the growing national divide. In 1995, the denomination apologized for its racial positions in its history. Since then, the group has become more racially diverse. Today, one in four SBC congregations has a nonwhite majority.

Some leaders now use the name "Great Commission Baptists." This term was adopted in 2012 after the election of the first African American president. Some use it to distance the group from its origins.

Membership numbers in the SBC have seen significant changes recently. Self-reported membership reached a peak in 2006. At that time, there were approximately 16 million members. Since then, membership has been on a continuous decline. This decline has lasted for 14 years as of 2020. Between 2006 and 2020, average weekly attendance dropped by about 27%. However, the rate of decline began to slow in 2024. The Convention reported 12,722,266 members in 2024. Despite these shifts, the SBC remains a massive organization. It includes tens of thousands of affiliated churches. It also operates through 41 affiliated state conventions.

The SBC's structure and beliefs connect it to broader religious and social systems. Its emphasis on autonomy allows for local church variation. Different churches may have different specific beliefs based on biblical interpretation. This helps balance local control with denominational unity. The group's history reflects the larger history of the United States. It shows how religious groups have responded to political and social shifts. From the struggle for religious freedom to the debates over civil rights, the SBC's journey is tied to the American experience.
