It sits south of China and east of the Indian subcontinent. To the north, it meets East Asia, while the Pacific Ocean lies to its east. The Indian Ocean and the Bay of Bengal border it to the west and south. The region is split into two main areas. One part is the mainland, which is entirely in the Northern Hemisphere. The other part is the maritime area, which includes many islands. Some of these islands, like Timor-Leste, sit south of the equator in the Southern Hemisphere.

The land itself is very active because of how the Earth is built. Southeast Asia sits near the meeting point of several large geological plates. The Sunda plate is the main plate for most of the region. However, parts of the Philippines and Indonesia also sit on the Pacific Ring of Fire.

These plates cause many earthquakes and volcanic eruptions. You can see this activity in places like the Mayon Volcano.

The mountains in Myanmar, Thailand, and Malaysia are part of the Alpide belt. This makes the geography very interesting and sometimes quite powerful.

Humans have lived in this region for a very long time. Some people, known as Homo erectus, were there about 1.5 million years ago.

One painting of a bull is thought to be one of the oldest in the world. For a long time, much of the western islands were joined together in a land called Sundaland. As sea levels changed, the islands we see today were formed.

Today, Southeast Asia is home to more than 670 million people.

Southeast Asia is a major geographical region in the southeastern part of Asia.

Southeast Asia Political Map World Factbook 2020.png
Southeast Asia Political Map World Factbook 2020.png
It sits south of China and east of the Indian subcontinent. To the north, it borders East Asia. To the west, it meets South Asia and the Bay of Bengal. The east is bordered by Oceania and the Pacific Ocean. To the south, the Indian Ocean and Australia provide boundaries. This region covers about 4.5 million square kilometers. This area is 8% of Eurasia and 3% of Earth's total land area.

The region is divided into two distinct subregions. Mainland Southeast Asia includes Cambodia, Laos, Myanmar, Peninsular Malaysia, Thailand, and Vietnam. This area lies entirely in the Northern Hemisphere. Maritime Southeast Asia consists of Brunei, East Malaysia, Indonesia, the Philippines, Singapore, and Timor-Leste.

Most of this area is in the Northern Hemisphere. However, Timor-Leste and southern Indonesia lie south of the equator. This makes Maritime Southeast Asia one of the few Asian subregions in the Southern Hemisphere. Some places, like the Andaman and Nicobar Islands, are also considered part of the maritime area.

Geology makes this region very active. Southeast Asia sits near the intersection of several geological plates. The Sunda plate is the primary plate for most of the region. It covers almost all countries except for parts of Myanmar, Thailand, Laos, Vietnam, and the northern Philippines. The mountains in Myanmar, Thailand, Malaysia, and parts of Indonesia belong to the Alpide belt. Other areas, like the Philippines and much of Indonesia, sit on the Pacific Ring of Fire.

These two seismic belts meet in Indonesia. This meeting causes frequent earthquakes and volcanic eruptions.

Human history in this region reaches back millions of years. Evidence shows that Homo erectus lived here about 1.5 million years ago.

A painting of a bull in Sulawesi is among the oldest figurative art in the world. In the past, lower sea levels created a large landmass called Sundaland. This connected western Indonesia to the Malay Peninsula. As sea levels rose, the islands we see today were separated from the mainland.

Culture and politics have changed significantly over time. Historically, the region was shaped by Indian, Chinese, and Muslim influences.

European powers later colonized most of the countries. They used the land for natural resources and labor. During World War II, the Empire of Japan briefly occupied several countries. After the war, most nations gained independence. Today, eleven countries belong to the Association of Southeast Asian Nations, known as ASEAN.
