In 1870, the area was split into two parts. This created South Dum Dum and North Dum Dum. One very old building is Clive House in Nagerbazar. People think it might have been built by the Portuguese. Later, Robert Clive used it as a country house around 1757. Archaeologists found many things there, like coins and pottery.

This house is now part of the Archaeological Survey of India.

Many people moved to this area after 1947. This was when Bengal was partitioned. Millions of refugees came from what was then East Pakistan. Many of these people were not farmers. They moved into empty buildings or unused land. They were often called "self-settlers." By 1949, there were 65 refugee colonies in the Dum Dum and Panihati zones. These groups worked hard to build a new society. They created their own markets, schools, temples, and even hospitals.

Today, South Dum Dum is a very large place for its size. In 2011, the population was 403,316 people.
