He was born on the island of Raasay. Gaelic was his first language. He grew up with many old songs. His family shared these songs through beul-aithris, which is an oral tradition.

MacLean could not sing like his relatives. This led him to write poems instead. His work helped make the Gaelic language feel new and strong.

His poems often looked at the past and the present. He wrote about the Highland Clearances. This was a time when many people were forced from their homes. He also wrote about the Spanish Civil War.

After the war, he became a head teacher. He worked hard to help students learn the Gaelic language in school. Many people now see him as a leader of Scottish poetry.
