Bruce Dawe was a famous Australian poet.

He wrote poems about many things. He wrote about cars and movies. He wrote about regular people in Australia. His poems often showed kindness to people who felt left out. One book he wrote was called *Sometimes Gladness*. It sold over 100,000 copies.

Before he was a famous writer, Dawe worked many jobs. He was a postman and a gardener. He also worked in a glass factory. He even served in the Air Force. While he was in Malaysia, he wrote a school song. That song was used for many years.

Dawe loved to teach. He taught at a school in Queensland. Later, he taught at the University of Southern Queensland. He earned four university degrees through part-time study.

He won many awards for his writing. He was even named an Officer of the Order of Australia. To help new writers, he gave money for a prize. This is the Bruce Dawe National Poetry Prize. It is given to Australian poets every year.
