She studied math, physics, and philosophy. Sophie was born in Paris on April 1, 1776. Her father was a wealthy silk merchant. When she was thirteen, she found math books in his library. She read about the mathematician Archimedes. This inspired her to study geometry and other math topics. She even taught herself Latin and Greek to read old books.

Sophie also studied how things vibrate and bend. This is called elasticity theory. She entered a contest held by the Paris Academy of Sciences. The goal was to explain the vibration of elastic surfaces.

For three years, she worked through Gauss's exercises and attempted her own proofs. She even used her pseudonym to write to him in 1804 regarding Fermat's Last Theorem.

During the Napoleonic wars, she even used a family friend to ensure Gauss's safety in Germany. Eventually, she disclosed her identity to him, and they maintained a sincere, though distant, friendship.

Although her equations were ingenious, they relied on an incorrect equation from Euler. This led to some inaccuracies in her predicted boundary conditions. Despite her success, the Academy still barred her from attending their official sessions. She eventually gained access through her friendship with Joseph Fourier. In 1821, she published her essay at her own expense to defend her methods against those of Denis Poisson.

Germain's most significant impact remains her work on Fermat's Last Theorem. This famous problem involves finding integer solutions for specific equations. She outlined a strategy for a general proof and made substantial progress on special cases. Her approach provided a foundation that mathematicians used for hundreds of years. Even though she could not pursue a formal professional career due to her sex, her independent research changed mathematics forever. She died of breast cancer on June 27, 1831.
