Her love for math began very early in her life. When she was eleven, she looked at math notes on her bedroom wall. These notes were from her father's old school days. She even began to understand hard ideas like calculus on her own. A physicist named Nikolai Tyrtov noticed her amazing talent. He even called her a "new Pascal" because she was so smart. She spent many years studying with great teachers like Karl Weierstrass. He taught her the same lessons given to university students.
To study in other countries, Sofya had to find a clever way. She could not travel without permission from a father or husband. So, she entered a fictitious marriage with Vladimir Kovalevskij in 1868. They moved to Germany so she could pursue her advanced studies. In 1869, she visited Heidelberg and attended physics classes there. She also went to London and met famous thinkers like George Eliot. Even when universities would not let her join, she kept learning. She worked hard to prove that her mind was just as capable as any man's.
In 1874, Sofya achieved something truly historic. She presented three important papers to the University of Göttingen. These papers were about math, Saturn's rings, and special integrals. Because of this work, she earned a doctorate in mathematics. She was the first woman to earn this degree in the modern sense. One of her papers helped create the Cauchy–Kovalevskaya theorem. This math rule helps explain how certain equations work. 
Later in her life, Sofya moved to Sweden to work. In 1889, she became a full professor at Stockholm University. This made her the first woman in modern Europe to hold such a job. She also won the Prix Bordin from the French Academy of Science. This prize was for her discovery of the "Kovalevskaya top." This describes a special way a solid object rotates. Her life shows how passion and persistence can break down barriers.

Her mother, Yelizaveta Fedorovna von Schubert, came from a family of German immigrants. Kovalevskaya's maternal great-grandfather was the astronomer Friedrich Theodor von Schubert. He was a member of the St. Petersburg Academy of Science. As a child, she showed an unusual aptitude for complex ideas. At age eleven, she studied calculus notes used as wallpaper in her room. These notes belonged to her father. A physicist named Nikolai Tyrtov observed her ability to discover trigonometric functions on her own. He even referred to her as a "new Pascal."
Because women could not attend universities in Russia, Kovalevskaya had to find alternative paths. She needed written permission from a father or husband to study abroad. In 1868, she entered a fictitious marriage with Vladimir Kovalevskij. He was a student of paleontology and a radical publisher. This arrangement allowed her to move to Germany in 1869 to pursue advanced studies. In Heidelberg, she audited physics and mathematics courses. She studied under famous professors like Hermann von Helmholtz and Gustav Kirchhoff. Later, she moved to Berlin to study with Karl Weierstrass. Since universities would not admit her, Weierstrass gave her private lessons. He taught her the same material used in his university lectures.
In 1874, Kovalevskaya reached a major academic milestone. She submitted three papers to the University of Göttingen for her doctoral dissertation. These papers covered partial differential equations, elliptic integrals, and the dynamics of Saturn's rings. With Weierstrass's support, she earned her doctorate summa cum laude. She was exempted from the usual oral examinations. 
After returning to Russia, Kovalevskaya faced professional and financial difficulties. Her husband failed to get a professorship due to his radical beliefs. The couple eventually faced bankruptcy. In 1883, she secured a position as a privat-docent at Stockholm University in Sweden. This was made possible with the help of mathematician Gösta Mittag-Leffler. 
Kovalevskaya's most famous discovery involved the motion of rigid bodies. In 1888, she won the Prix Bordin from the French Academy of Science. This award recognized her work on a specific case of a heavy body rotating around a fixed point. Her research identified the "Kovalevskaya top." This was a major discovery because it was the only other case of completely integrable rigid body motion besides the Euler and Lagrange tops. In 1889, she was appointed as an Ordinary Professor at Stockholm University. This made her the first woman in modern Europe to hold a full professorship in mathematics.
Beyond her mathematical work, Kovalevskaya was a person of many interests. She was involved in the progressive political and feminist movements of her time. She wrote several non-mathematical works, including her memoir, *A Russian Childhood*. She also wrote two plays and an autobiographical novel titled *Nihilist Girl*.
