Paul meets two different women. One is Miriam, a farmer's daughter. They talk about books and take long walks. The other is Clara Dawes. She is a woman with new ideas about rights. The book is based on the writer's own life. Lawrence had a very close bond with his mother too. He wrote about his family's struggles. His father was a coal miner. His mother came from a different class. This caused many fights in their home. Lawrence rewrote the book four times. He even changed the title. At first, it was called Paul Morel. He wanted it to be a great work of art. Many people now call it a masterpiece.
