Song Ci is most famous for being the world's first forensic entomologist. Forensic entomology is the scientific study of insects to help solve legal cases. His work helped ensure that justice was served correctly in the courts. He wanted to avoid miscarriages of justice, which happen when people are punished wrongly.

Song Ci was born into a family of bureaucrats in Jianyang. This area is known as Nanping in the Fujian province today. Throughout his life, he served as a presiding judge in several high courts. During his time at a criminal court in Hunan Province, he took a hands-on approach. He personally examined crime scenes whenever he faced difficult cases. These cases often involved homicide or physical assault. By looking at the scenes himself, he could gather better evidence for his judicial decisions.

To share his knowledge, Song Ci wrote a significant book. It is titled "Collected Cases of Injustice Rectified." This book served as a textbook for coroners and criminal investigators. It combined his own personal experiences with historical forensic science cases. Song Ci used the book to teach others how to assess a crime scene effectively. He provided detailed notes on how a person died. He also elaborated on the probable causes of death in various situations.

The book acted as a guide for investigators to follow.

The book explains specific processes for examining a corpse. Song Ci wrote about how to inspect a body both before and after burial. He detailed the steps required to determine a probable cause of death. This level of detail was very important for medical researchers. His methods helped investigators understand the biological facts of a case. By following these steps, they could reach more accurate conclusions. This systematic approach made his work a foundation for forensic science.

One of the most famous examples from his book occurred in 1235. This case involved a murder committed with a sickle. A sickle is a tool that peasants use to cut rice during a harvest. Investigators determined that a villager had been stabbed to death with one. Because of this, they suspected a peasant worker might be the killer. To find the truth, the villagers were gathered in a town square. They were all required to relinquish their sickles for inspection.

Most of the tools appeared to be completely clean. However, flies were attracted to one specific sickle and swarmed it. The flies were reacting to tiny, invisible traces of blood on the tool. This discovery led the perpetrator to confess to the crime.

The impact of Song Ci's work was felt globally over many centuries. His book, "Collected Cases of Injustice Rectified," was highly esteemed by generations of forensic scientists. It was eventually translated into many different languages to spread its knowledge. These languages included English, German, Japanese, and French. His ability to use biological evidence, like insects, changed how legal matters were handled. This was the first recorded instance in history of using forensic entomology for judicial purposes.

Song Ci's legacy continues to be recognized in modern culture and science. His life and work have inspired various forms of media. There are TVB dramas and CCTV dramas based on his book. A novel titled "The Corpse Reader" was also written based on his work. Another novel, "Final Witness: The Story of China's First Crime Scene Investigator," is based on his life. His contributions to anthropology and medicine remain a vital part of scientific history. He helped bridge the gap between medical science and the legal system.
