Sombat Metanee was a monumental figure in the history of Thai cinema and television. He was a prolific actor and film director who achieved immense fame throughout his long career. His work spanned many different genres, including action, romance, drama, comedy, and musicals. Because of his massive output, he once held the Guinness World Record for the most film appearances, with more than 600 credits. By his own count, he participated in over 2,000 films and television shows. His dedication to the performing arts earned him the prestigious title of National Artist in 2016.

Sombat's journey into the spotlight began with a series of specific professional connections. In 1960, Namdee Witta, a leader of a television performance troupe, introduced him to show business. He first starred in the television series Hua Jai Pratana, also known as "Heart's Desires." Shortly after, director Noi Kamolwatin noticed his physical presence and cast him in the film Roong Petch, or "Diamond Rainbow." This film opened at the Empire Theatre in Bangkok and became a massive success. This success established Sombat as a leading man with a distinct look, characterized by a brawny face and slicked-back, pomaded hair.

As his career progressed, Sombat moved through several distinct stages of stardom. During the 1960s and 1970s, he was a premier leading man in action and musical films. He often performed his own stunts, a skill that made him a popular action star. After the accidental death of top actor Mitr Chaibancha in 1970, Sombat became Thailand's top leading man. He frequently shared the screen with Petchara Chaowarat in musical comedies like Ai Tui. Later, he was mostly paired with Aranya Namwong, and they became the country's most famous screen couple. In his later years, he transitioned from hero roles to playing the "heavy," or the main villain. He showed his range in films like the 2000 western Tears of the Black Tiger.

Sombat's life was also defined by his drive for education and political service. To run for political office in Thailand, candidates must hold a university degree. Sombat returned to school between film shoots to meet this requirement. He earned a Bachelor of Arts from Rajabhat Walailongkorn University and a Master of Public Administration from Eastern Asia University. He even worked toward a Ph.D. in public administration. In the 2006 Thai general election, he was elected to the Senate of Thailand representing Bangkok. He received 53,562 votes, though his six-year term was interrupted by the 2006 Thailand coup.

His professional achievements are marked by significant numbers and high honors. In 1973, he founded Metanee Film, a company that produced 23 films over five years. He was also a talented musician, recording approximately 200 songs and releasing various movie soundtrack albums. In 1966, he won a "Golden Doll," which was Thailand's equivalent to an Academy Award. He received this best actor statuette for his role in Suek Bang Rajan from King Bhumibol. At the 2006 Bangkok International Film Festival, he was honored with a Lifetime Achievement Award. This event included a retrospective of five films spanning his career from the 1960s to the 2000s.

Beyond the screen, Sombat maintained a deep connection to his personal roots and family. He was born in Ubon Ratchathani, but his family moved to Bangkok when he was only seven days old. His father's work for the Royal State Railways of Siam led them to the Saphan On neighborhood. Sombat married his childhood neighbor, Kanchana, in 1959, and she managed his film company. They had five children, including a son, Siricoup, who also entered the film industry. Sombat passed away on 18 August 2022, at the age of 85, leaving behind a massive cultural legacy.

Sombat Metanee's career connects the worlds of mass entertainment, political leadership, and academic pursuit. He was not just a face on a screen, but a man who navigated the complexities of Thai society. His ability to move from action hero to senator demonstrates the diverse impact a single individual can have. He bridged the gap between traditional performance and modern media, including television commercials and talk shows. His life remains a study in how a person can master multiple fields through persistence and skill. He remains a central figure in the study of Southeast Asian film history.
