Fernando Poe Jr., widely known by his initials FPJ or the nickname "Da King," was a towering figure in Philippine cinema. He was an actor, director, and screenwriter whose career spanned nearly five decades.

Beyond his acting, he was a cultural icon who dominated the Philippine box office from the 1960s through the 1990s. His film roles often portrayed him as a champion and defender of the poor and oppressed. This specific persona helped him build a deep connection with the Filipino people.

Poe's professional path began with significant personal responsibility. He was born Ronald Allan Kelley Poe on August 20, 1939, in Manila. His father was the famous actor and director Fernando Poe Sr. When his father died from rabies in 1951, Poe had to become the breadwinner for his family. To support them, he dropped out of his sophomore year at the University of the East. He entered the film industry through humble roles, working first as a messenger boy and then as a stuntman for Everlasting Pictures.

His acting career progressed through several distinct stages of fame and responsibility. He made his debut in 1955 with the film *Anak ni Palaris*, a sequel to a film starring his father. His major breakout occurred in 1956 with the film *Lo' Waist Gang*. This movie was so successful that it sparked a fashion trend involving low-waist pants. As he grew in popularity, he transitioned from being just an actor to a creator. He established FPJ Productions in 1961 and directed films using pseudonyms like D'Lanor and Ronwaldo Reyes.

Throughout his career, Poe appeared in approximately 300 films between 1955 and 2003. He was known for diverse genres, including the fantasy series *Ang Panday* and influential action films. Some of his notable works include *Only the Brave Know Hell* (1965), *Asedillo* (1971), and *Ang Probinsyano* (1996). In the 1980s, he was one of the highest-paid actors in the Philippines. His salary during that decade reached over one million pesos per film. He also achieved significant success as a director, winning awards for *Ang Padrino* in 1984 and *Kahit Butas ng Karayom, Papasukin Ko* in 1995.

Poe's talent earned him immense professional recognition and prestigious honors. He won five FAMAS Awards for Best Actor, which led to his induction into the FAMAS Hall of Fame in 1988.

His family officially accepted this title in 2012.

In 2004, Poe expanded his influence from the screen to the political arena. He ran as the candidate for the Koalisyon ng Nagkakaisang Pilipino (KNP) in the Philippine presidential election. The campaign was difficult, as opponents attempted to disqualify him by questioning his citizenship. He ultimately lost the election to the incumbent, Gloria Macapagal Arroyo. The margin was just over one million votes, or 3.48%. This represented the closest percentage margin between a winner and a runner-up in the history of Philippine presidential elections.

Following the election, Poe's health declined rapidly. He died on December 14, 2004, at the age of 65 due to a stroke and cerebral thrombosis. His passing caused massive public mourning, with organizers claiming as many as two million people attended his nine-day wake.

His legacy continues through modern media and public infrastructure. His 1997 film *Ang Probinsyano* was remade as a long-running TV series in 2015. Additionally, several locations bear his name, including Fernando Poe Jr. Avenue and the FPJ Arena. His film archives have even been inscribed in the National Memory of the World Register of the Philippines.
