It started because of a leader named Siad Barre. He ruled the country for a long time. In the 1980s, many people became unhappy with his rule. They felt his government was unfair.

Different rebel groups began to fight the government. Some groups fought in the north. Others fought in the south. This led to very hard times. In the north, cities like Hargeisa saw much damage.

By 1991, the rebel groups overthrew Siad Barre.

After the government fell, the country had no central leader. This made life very hard. Different groups fought to take control. The United Nations sent troops to help, but they left in 1995. Since then, many groups have tried to lead. Some parts of the north made their own local governments.

Fighting has changed over time. It was very intense in the early 1990s. Later, groups like Al-Shabaab began to fight the government.

In 2012, Somalia formed a new permanent government. People are still working to make the country stable and safe.
