Most radios use special electronic parts to work. These parts include things like filters and amplifiers.

A software-defined radio, or SDR, is different. It uses a computer to do these jobs. Instead of using hardware, it uses software. This means it uses sets of instructions called code.

This makes the radio very flexible. It can change how it works very quickly. An SDR can use many different radio protocols. A protocol is a set of rules for how signals are sent. This is very helpful for cell phone services. It is also helpful for the military.

How does it work? First, an antenna catches a radio signal. Then, a low-noise amplifier makes the signal stronger.

Next, an analog-to-digital converter changes the signal. This part turns the wave into digital data. Finally, a computer processor handles the rest. The computer uses the software to understand the data. This allows one radio to do many different jobs.
