Sodium hydride

physical science Maturity 9-11 Next article →

Sodium hydride is a special chemical compound. It is known by the formula NaH. This substance is a salt-like hydride. It is made of sodium and hydrogen ions. This makes it very different from other hydrides like methane or ammonia. Most hydrides are made of molecules. Sodium hydride is an ionic material instead. It does not dissolve in any solvents. The only way to dissolve it is in molten sodium metal.

This material has a very specific shape. It uses a pattern called the NaCl crystal structure. This is the same pattern found in rock salt. In this shape, every ion is surrounded by six others. This creates a shape called an octahedral geometry. The particles are very close together. In fact, it is about 40% denser than pure sodium. Most samples look grey even though the material is colorless.

Making this compound requires a careful process. Workers mix molten sodium into mineral oil. They also add hydrogen gas at atmospheric pressure. The mixture must be stirred very fast. It is mixed at about 8000 rpm. This reaction happens very quickly at 150 degrees Celsius. The result is a suspension of NaH in oil. This oil helps make the material easier to use.

Scientists use sodium hydride for many big jobs. It is a very strong base. It can act as a superbase to change weak acids. It helps build molecules through many types of condensation reactions. These include the Claisen and Dieckmann condensations. It can also act as a reducing agent. It can change boron trifluoride into diborane. It can even help change imines into amines.

We must treat this substance with great care. It can catch fire all by itself in the air. It also reacts very strongly with water. This reaction releases hydrogen gas. Hydrogen is a gas that burns very easily. It also creates sodium hydroxide, which is a corrosive base. Because of this, most NaH is sold in mineral oil. This makes it safer to weigh and handle.
