Sodium hydride

physical science Maturity 9-11 Next article →

Sodium hydride is a special salt. It is made of sodium and hydrogen. It is often grey in color. This salt has a crystal structure like rock salt. In this shape, each part is surrounded by six others.

Scientists use it to make new things. It is a strong base. A base is a substance that can change other chemicals. It can even pull parts away from weak acids. This helps make many different types of molecules. It can also act as a reducing agent. This means it helps change how atoms are joined together.

Some people think it could store hydrogen gas. This could help power cars. To get the gas, you would crush small pellets in water.

We must handle this salt with great care. It can catch fire in the air. It also reacts fast with water. This reaction lets out hydrogen gas. This gas burns very easily. To keep it safe, shops often sell it in mineral oil. The oil makes it safer to touch and weigh. This makes the salt easier to use in a lab.
