A social network is a web of links between people. These links can be between two people or large groups.

Scientists study these webs to see how people connect. They want to find influential people in a group. They also study how false news spreads on social media.

Many thinkers helped start this study. In the 1930s, Jacob Moreno made maps of social ties.

These maps are called sociograms. They show how people in a group interact. In the 1970s, Stanley Milgram studied how people are linked. He spoke about "six degrees of separation." This idea means most people are close through a few links.

Researchers look at networks on different levels. The micro-level looks at small groups. A dyad is a link between two people. A triad is a group of three people.

Large networks can even show patterns that form on their own. This is called self-organization. Today, we use computers to study these big digital webs.
