Building a snowboard involves many smart steps. Most boards have a core made of hardwood. This core is sandwiched between layers of fiberglass.

The bottom of the board is called the base. It is usually made of a plastic called polyethylene. Some bases are "sintered," which means the plastic is ground into powder first. Snowboarding has a very interesting history. Long ago, people used sliding planks of wood to move on snow. In 1917, a boy named Vern Wicklund made a homemade board in Minnesota. He called his invention a "bunker." Later, in 1965, Sherm Poppen created the Snurfer. The name comes from mixing the words "snow" and "surfer."

Early Snurfers did not have bindings. Instead, riders held onto a rope called a lanyard. They also stood on metal staples to help them stay on. These early boards paved the way for the modern equipment we see today.

Many people helped make snowboarding what it is now. Jake Burton Carpenter and Tom Sims are famous for creating modern boards. They added bindings and steel edges in the late 1970s.

In 1981, Chuck Barfoot started his own company. Other inventors, like Gary Tracy, made the first fiberglass boards in 1982. Snowboarding grew so fast that it became an Olympic sport in 1998. It first appeared at the Nagano Winter Games. Since then, new events like Big Air were added in 2018.

To function effectively, a snowboard relies on a specific mechanical construction. Most boards feature a hardwood core sandwiched between multiple layers of fiberglass. The bottom of the board, known as the base, is typically made of polyethylene plastic. There are two main types of base construction: extruded and sintered. An extruded base is a simple, low-maintenance design where the plastic is melted into shape. A sintered base is more complex; the material is ground into powder and then molded using heat and pressure. This creates a porous structure that absorbs wax, which reduces friction by allowing the board to glide on a thin layer of water.

Racing or Alpine boards are long, narrow, and rigid for speed on groomed slopes. For those traveling into the backcountry, a splitboard is used. A splitboard can divide lengthwise to function like cross-country skis for climbing, then rejoin for the descent.

Snowboarding has achieved significant commercial and professional success. By 2008, it had become a $487 million industry, with average equipment costs around $540. The sport gained massive international recognition when it debuted at the 1998 Nagano Winter Games. While the International Ski Federation (FIS) initially faced challenges with scoring and course maintenance, the sport continued to expand.
