The snare drum is a percussion instrument with a very sharp sound.

It is famous for its loud, cracking noise. This happens because of wires called snares. These wires are held tight against the bottom skin. When a drummer hits the top, the whole drum vibrates. This makes the snares shake against the bottom head.

This instrument is used in many places. You can hear it in orchestras and concert bands. It is also a main part of a drum set. Many marching bands and parades use them too. Because basic rhythms are easy to learn, children often start with it. It is a great tool for music education.

Building a snare drum involves many careful steps. The shell can be made of wood, metal, or even plastic. Some wooden shells are made of many thin layers. Others are made from single pieces of wood.

The drum has two heads, which are the surfaces you hit. The top head is called the batter head. The bottom head is the resonant head. Most modern drums use a plastic called Mylar for these heads. In the past, people used skin from goats or calves. To keep the drum in tune, players use tension rods. They can also use a lever called a strainer. This lever can turn the snares on or off. If the snares are off, the drum sounds like a tom-tom.

The history of the snare drum goes back a long time. It likely came from a medieval drum called a tabor.

A tabor was often played along with a flute. In the 15th century, the drum became more cylindrical in shape. Swiss mercenary troops used these drums in the 15th and 16th centuries. By the 17th century, people used screws to hold the snares. This made the drum sound much brighter. In 1956, a drummer named Marion "Chick" Evans made the first plastic drumhead. This changed how drums were made and played forever.

There are many different sizes of snare drums today. A marching snare is usually very deep, often about 12 inches. A kit snare is shorter and used in drum sets. The piccolo snare is the smallest and shallowest of all. Some very tiny drums are even called popcorn drums. These small drums make very high sounds for special effects. Different playing styles match these different sizes. For example, marching bands use different styles than pop music groups. In pop music, drummers often play a "backbeat" style. This helps keep the steady rhythm for the song.

Drummers use many special techniques to make music. They mostly use wooden sticks to strike the head. Some use brushes or rutes for a softer sound. A rimshot is when you hit the rim and head at once. This creates a loud, metallic click. Another way is called a "cross-stick" or "side-stick." This makes a dry, high click used in jazz music. Drummers also practice rudiments, which are basic patterns. One famous move is the drum roll. This uses many fast strokes to create one long sound. These skills help drummers play complex patterns and solos.
