The pipe organ is a grand and powerful musical instrument.

It makes sound by sending pressurized air, called wind, through many different pipes. Each pipe creates a single note or pitch. To give the player many choices, pipes are grouped into sets called ranks. Each rank has its own special tone, volume, and build. A player can pick one rank or mix many together. They do this using controls known as stops.

This mixing allows for a huge variety of beautiful sounds.

Playing an organ requires both hands and feet. The player sits at a console to reach the controls. This console holds one or more keyboards called manuals. Most organs also have a pedalboard played with the feet. Each keyboard can control its own group of stops, which is called a division. Unlike a piano, the organ can hold a note for a long time. As long as the key is pressed, the wind keeps flowing. This allows the music to stay steady and strong.

The history of the organ goes back thousands of years. It started in Ancient Greece during the 3rd century BC. An engineer named Ctesibius of Alexandria is credited with its invention. He made a version called the hydraulis. This early instrument used water pressure to move the air.

Later, people began using leather bellows to supply the wind. By the 6th or 7th century AD, these bellows were used in the Byzantine Empire. This shows how the instrument changed to become more reliable.

Organs have grown from small tools to massive machines.

Small portable organs might only have a few dozen pipes. However, the largest organs can have over 33,000 pipes! In the 10th century, an organ in Winchester Cathedral was very large. It had 400 pipes and needed 70 men just to blow the wind. By the 17th century, most sounds used today were already developed. For a long time, it was the most complex machine made by humans.

Today, you can find organs in many different places. They are common in churches and synagogues. You can also hear them in concert halls, schools, and large public buildings. In the early 1900s, organs were even used in movie theaters. They played music to go along with silent films. Now, many people enjoy hearing them in grand concert halls again. They play everything from sacred music to popular songs. The organ remains a vital part of musical history.
