Slash (punctuation)

language culture Maturity 11-13 Next article →

A slash is a slanted line. It is also called a stroke or a solidus. People use this mark in many ways. It can mean the word "or." This helps show a choice between two things. For example, you might see "he/she." This can make writing more gender-neutral. Slashes also show two things that go together. You might see them used to list stops on a trip.

In math, the slash is very helpful. It sits between two numbers to show a fraction. This makes math easier to write on one line.

It can also show division. A person named De Morgan suggested using it for division. He thought it would save space on a page. In math, a slash can even turn a symbol around. A slash through an "equal" sign means "not equal."

Computers use the slash too. It is often called a "forward slash." It helps separate different parts of a file path. A file path shows where a file is kept on a computer. This is common in systems like Linux or macOS.
