Siti binti Saad was a famous singer from Zanzibar.

She was a star of taarab music. This style is special to the Swahili coast. Siti was a pioneer for women in music. At that time, most musical groups were only for men. She used her voice to speak for her people. She was a leader and a cultural icon.

Siti's music was a way to share life's feelings. She sang about love and religion in her songs. Many of her songs also talked about daily life. She sang about things that were not fair in her world. She even created a new dance called natiki. This dance used moves inspired by Indian dance. It added a new way to move to taarab music.

Siti had a very interesting life story. She was born around 1880 in a village called Fumba. She was born into slavery, and her name was Mtumwa. This name meant "slave" or "servant" in her language. Her parents worked on clove plantations in Zanzibar. Later, she moved to Zanzibar Town to find freedom. She lived in a place called Ng'ambo.

Siti became the first East African singer to make records. In 1928, she went to Bombay to record songs. She used a machine called a phonograph. Her first session produced 56 songs on 28 records. These records were very popular and sold many copies. By 1931, she and her band had sold many thousands. She eventually made over 250 records in her life.

Her music helped the Swahili language grow and spread. Before her, many singers only used the Arabic language. Siti sang mostly in Swahili, which many people spoke. This helped people feel proud of their own culture. She showed that Swahili was a very advanced language. Even after she died in 1950, her influence remained. More women began to join musical groups after her time.
