Sitara Devi was a famous Indian dancer who mastered the classical Kathak style. This art form is known for its grace and skill. She was often called the "Kathak queen." A famous leader named Rabindranath Tagore even called her the "empress of dance."

She was a singer and an actress too. Her life was filled with the rhythm of music and movement. She brought the beauty of Indian dance to the whole world.

Learning to dance was a big part of her life from the start. Her father, Sukhdev Maharaj, was a scholar and a teacher of Kathak. He opened a school to teach his children the art.

Sitara learned many special ways to move. Her style combined two different traditions called the Benaras and Lucknow Gharana. She focused on things like "naaz" and "nazakat," which are ways to show grace and elegance. This training took a lot of hard work and practice.

Sitara's journey began in Kolkata, which was then called Calcutta. She was born on November 8, 1920. Her family had roots in the city of Varanasi.

When she was a young girl, she showed great talent at her school. She even taught other students how to dance for a school play. By the age of ten, she was performing solo dances during movie breaks. At age eleven, her family moved to Bombay, which is now Mumbai.

She became a star in many Hindi movies. She appeared in films like "Usha Haran" in 1940 and "Mother India" in 1957.

In one movie, she even performed a Holi dance while dressed as a boy. She chose to stop dancing in movies so she could focus on classical Kathak. Sitara performed on famous stages far from home. She danced at the Royal Albert Hall in London in 1967. She also performed at Carnegie Hall in New York in 1976.

Sitara received many honors for her amazing talent. She won the Sangeet Natak Akademi Award in 1969 and the Padma Shree in 1973.

Later in her life, she became a teacher for famous movie stars. She wanted to build a special academy to train new dancers. Even though she was a master of Kathak, she also studied Russian ballet. Sitara Devi passed away in Mumbai on November 25, 2014. Her legacy lives on through the many people she taught.
