An Italian artist named Raphael made it. He painted it around the years 1513 and 1514. Pope Julius II asked for the work. He wanted it for a church in Piacenza, Italy. The painting shows Mary holding the baby Jesus. Two little winged angels, called putti, rest on their elbows at the bottom.

These angels are very well known. Some stories say Raphael saw children looking into a bakery window. He may have used their pose for the painting.

This art has a long history. In 1754, it moved to Dresden, Germany. It was sold for a very high price. During World War II, the painting was moved to a tunnel. Later, it was taken to Moscow, Russia. In 1955, the Soviet Union sent it back to Germany. Today, it is a showpiece in a German museum. Many people think the painting is divine. It has even inspired other art, like stamps in Belarus.
