The water starts at the Ropar headworks. This is near the city of Ropar. From there, the water flows southwest. It travels to a place called Doraha. At Doraha, the canal splits into three parts. These are the Abohar branch, the Bathinda branch, and the Patiala branch. Each part splits again to reach more land. These paths help the Malwa region. This area used to be dry. Now the land is very fertile. This means the soil is great for growing plants. In 1885, the British made a new branch. This part helps the Faridkot State. The canal is a very important way to move water.
