One fight began in 1854 at Fort Laramie in Wyoming. Later, in 1862, the Dakota Sioux fought in Minnesota. This happened because the government did not pay them as promised. The fighting in Minnesota was very hard. Many people died, and many Sioux were later sent to court. In one case, 38 men were hanged in a town called Mankato.

Other fights happened in Colorado and the Black Hills. In 1864, a group of soldiers attacked a village at Sand Creek. This was a very sad event. Many Sioux and other tribes moved to find safety. They fought in many battles, like the Battle of Julesburg.

In 1865, the Army led a large group of soldiers into the Black Hills. They fought in the Powder River War. This war included the Sioux, Cheyenne, and Arapaho tribes. These many conflicts changed how people lived in the West.
