Silviculture

language culture Maturity 11-13 Next article →

Silviculture is the art of growing forests.

Experts called silviculturists manage groups of trees. They care for the quality and growth of the woods. They do this to meet many needs. One big goal is to grow wood for people to use.

New trees must start from seeds. This is called regeneration. Some seeds fall from trees on their own. We call this natural regeneration. People can also sow seeds by hand. They can even plant small seedlings.

Seeds need a good place to start. This place is called a seedbed. A seedbed needs the right moisture and heat. It also needs air. Some seeds need light to wake up and grow. For example, spruce seeds can grow without light. But many other seeds need it.

Young trees need care to stay alive. They need shade so they do not get too hot. They also need food from the soil.

In a forest, old fallen trees make great spots for new growth. These spots help seeds stay safe from floods and snow. This helps the forest stay healthy for a long time.
