Siltstone is a special type of sedimentary rock. It is made mostly of silt. Silt is a very fine material. The grains are between 2 and 62 micrometers wide.

Some people call it aleurolite. This rock is a type of mudrock. It has a low amount of clay. You can tell it apart from shale. Shale splits into thin, flat layers. Siltstone does not have this trait.

How does this rock form? It starts in quiet places. These places are called depositional environments. Here, tiny particles settle out of water or air. They slowly pile up on the ground. This can happen in deltas. It can also happen near glaciers. Siltstone is found in many places. It appears in turbidite sequences and miogeosynclinal settings.

Many silt grains are made of quartz. This is a very hard mineral. It is hard to break quartz into tiny bits. Big grains must break down through strong forces. One way is through glacial grinding. Cold glaciers can crush the grains. Other ways include weathering in hot deserts. It can also happen in tropical mountain ranges. These processes turn large grains into silt.

Scientists use different ways to define this rock. One way looks at the amount of silt. This definition requires at least 50% silt particles. Another way looks at the clay and silt together. It says two-thirds of that mix must be silt. You can even test it with your hands. Claystone feels very smooth. Siltstone feels gritty when you touch it.

It also has smaller pores than sandstone.

People have used siltstone for a long time. Ancient Egyptians prized this rock very much. They used it to make statues. They also used it for cosmetic palettes. Some siltstone came from Wadi Hammamat. This stone was very hard. It did not flake easily. This made it almost ideal for art.
