Siltstone is a type of sedimentary rock. It is made mostly of silt. Silt is made of tiny grains. These grains are between 2 and 62 micrometers wide.

You can tell it apart from other rocks by feel. Claystone feels smooth. Siltstone feels gritty. It is also different from shale. Shale splits into thin layers. Siltstone does not do this.

Many silt grains are made of quartz. This is a hard mineral. It is hard to break quartz into such small bits. Big grains must break down through strong forces. This can happen in cold glaciers. It can also happen in hot deserts.

Siltstone forms in quiet places. Small bits settle in water or air. They pile up on the ground. This happens in deltas or near glaciers.

People in ancient Egypt used this rock. They used it to make statues. They also used it for cosmetic palettes. Some siltstone from Wadi Hammamat was very hard. It did not flake easily. This made it great for art.
