Her book was called Silent Spring. It was published in 1962. Rachel studied how certain sprays hurt nature. These sprays are called pesticides. They are used to kill pests like bugs. One common spray was named DDT.

Rachel saw that these chemicals did not just kill pests. They also hurt birds and other animals. She even found links to human sickness.

Rachel learned about these problems from many sources. A friend told her about dead birds near her home. Rachel also looked at how the government sprayed for fire ants. This spraying used fuel oil mixed with chemicals. It caused harm to many living things.

Many chemical companies fought against her book. They did not want people to know the truth. But Rachel's work changed the world. It led to a ban on using DDT for farms. It also helped start the US Environmental Protection Agency. This group helps keep our air and water safe today.
