To achieve flight, the Black Hawk uses a specific mechanical system. It is powered by two General Electric T700 turboshaft engines. These engines drive a four-blade main rotor system. The main rotor is fully articulated, meaning the blades can move independently. It uses elastomeric bearings in the rotor head to manage these movements. A canted tail rotor with a rigid crossbeam helps control the aircraft's direction. 
Different versions of the Black Hawk are built for specific tasks. The Navy uses the SH-60 Seahawk for maritime missions. The Air Force operates the HH-60 Pave Hawk for rescue work. The Coast Guard utilizes the MH-60 Jayhawk. Even the civilian sector uses the S-70 model. For high-ranking officials, a version called the VH-60N is used. When the President of the United States is on board, the call sign is "Marine One." 
The history of the Black Hawk began with a specific military requirement. In the late 1960s, the U.S. Army started the Utility Tactical Transport Aircraft System, or UTTAS, program. They needed a replacement for the Bell UH-1 Iroquois. The Army wanted better reliability and survivability based on experiences in Vietnam. In January 1972, the Army released a request for proposals. Sikorsky submitted the YUH-60A prototype, which first flew on October 17, 1974. 
Engineers have continuously upgraded the Black Hawk to improve its performance. In 1987, the Army ordered the UH-60L to handle increased weight from new equipment. This model used upgraded T700-GE-701C engines and an improved gearbox from the SH-60B Seahawk. This increased the external lift capacity by up to 15 percent. Later, the UH-60M was approved in 2001 to extend the design's life into the 2020s. The UH-60M features T700-GE-701D engines and advanced electronic instrumentation. Manufacturing for the M-model began in 2006, and the Army signed a contract for 1,227 helicopters in 2007.
Some Black Hawk missions involve highly specialized technology. During an operation in May 2011, a secret version of the helicopter was used. This craft utilized low-observable technology to evade radar. It featured special high-tech materials, harsh angles, and flat surfaces similar to stealth jets. It also included extra blades on the tail rotor to reduce noise. 
The Black Hawk's impact is seen globally through its many users and capabilities.
