In daily life, it means a partner. This term is gender-neutral. It does not say if people are married. It can mean a sweetheart or a soulmate. It also means a life partner.

In science, the term has a different meaning. In psychology, it is a person who is very important. This person helps a person's well-being. In sociology, it is a person who shapes how you see yourself.

Three researchers studied this at a university. Archie Haller, Edward Fink, and Joseph Woelfel studied 100 teens. They looked at what the teens wanted to do for work. They found that important people had a big impact. The hopes of these people shaped what the teens wanted.

These important people also help children grow. They protect and reward the child. This helps for about six or seven years. A doctor named Harry Stack Sullivan first used the term in 1940. Later, a book and a TV show made the phrase popular.
