In 1462, the Portuguese explorer Pedro de Sintra mapped the region. He named it after the mountains near Freetown. He used the Portuguese term for "lioness mountains." Later, the Venetian explorer Alvise Cadamosto introduced a different spelling. This Venetian spelling became the modern name used by European mapmakers. This history shows how early European explorers interacted with the African coast. It also shows how names can change through different languages.

Human habitation in this region is very old. People have lived there for at least 2,500 years.

By the 9th century, people had adopted iron technology. Agriculture was well-established along the coast by 1000 AD. The geography actually helped protect some groups from invasion. Thick rainforests and swamps acted as natural defenses. Additionally, the tsetse fly carried diseases that were fatal to horses. This limited the influence of large empires like the Mali Empire. In the 18th century, Islam was introduced by Susu traders and migrants. This helped establish a strong presence in the north.

European interaction began in the 15th century. Traders from the Dutch Republic, England, and France established stations. They primarily engaged in the slave trade, which changed the region deeply.
