The Siege of Turin was a major event during the War of the Spanish Succession. This war began after the death of King Charles II of Spain in 1700. He had no children to take his place. He named Philip of Anjou as his heir. Philip was the grandson of the French King Louis XIV. This choice caused a fight between France and a group called the Grand Alliance.

A siege happens when an army surrounds a city to take control. In 1706, the French army tried to take the city of Turin. Turin was the capital of the Duchy of Savoy. The French had already taken much of the land around it. The siege began on June 2, 1706. The French used guns to fire at the city's citadel. A citadel is a strong fort at the center of a city.

Many people worked to defend the city during this hard time. A man named Pietro Micca became a famous hero. He worked to stop the French from using tunnels under the city. On August 31, he exploded a mine to block a tunnel. This act helped protect the citadel.
