It took place during the War of the Austrian Succession. This war began after Emperor Charles VI died in 1740. His daughter, Maria Theresa, became the heir to the throne. However, some leaders challenged her right to rule. This led to many countries fighting against each other.

The battle happened near a town called Tournai. This town was in the Austrian Netherlands, which is now part of Belgium.

France wanted to win a big victory here. Winning would help their money problems. Marshal Saxe led the French army of 50,000 men. He wanted to force the Allies to fight on his terms. The Allied group was called the Pragmatic Army.

It was led by the Duke of Cumberland. This army was also about 50,000 men strong.

Saxe used the land to protect his soldiers. He placed his men behind hills and strong walls. His line stretched along a high plateau. The French army used villages like Fontenoy for defense.

The Allies had many different groups of soldiers. They had troops from Britain, Hanover, and the Dutch Republic. They also had some Austrians. These groups did not always work well together. They had different goals and often disagreed. This made it hard for Cumberland to lead them.

The fighting began early on May 11, 1745.

The Allies tried to attack the French sides first. These attacks did not work well. Later, a large group of 15,000 Allied soldiers marched up a slope. They moved toward the French center. Some stories say the French Guards invited the Allies to fire first.

The Allies fired, but the French were still strong. The French then pushed the central column back. The Allied soldiers had to retreat toward Brussels.

After the battle, France took control of the Austrian Netherlands. However, the war did not end right away. France faced more money troubles even after more wins in 1746 and 1747. The war finally ended in November 1748. This happened because of the Treaty of Aix-la-Chapelle. Under this treaty, France gave back the lands they had gained. The battle shows how much land and money mattered in old wars. It also shows how hard it is to lead many different groups at once.
