The French army had 50,000 men. The Allied army was about the same size.

Saxe used the land to help his troops. He put them behind hills and walls. The Allies tried to attack the French center. A large group of 15,000 soldiers marched up a slope. They reached the French line. Some stories say the French soldiers waited for the Allies to fire first. The French army was very strong. They pushed the Allied soldiers back. The Allies had to retreat. This gave France control of the area.
